Chichester takes us east into West Sussex, about a 25-minute run on the A27. The cathedral city itself has a high proportion of period property — Georgian townhouses around the Pallants, Victorian terrace through Whyke and Summersdale, and a notable amount of Grade II listed stock — where slate work, lead detailing and conservation-area sensitivity all matter.

We approach Chichester work differently from a standard Hampshire job. The conservation areas around the city centre and around the cathedral close mean materials and details have to match what is already there: natural slate or hand-made clay tile, traditional lead work in code 4 or 5, lime-based mortars rather than cement. We do not push modern dry-fix systems on a Georgian townhouse where they would look wrong and are not necessary.

The villages around Chichester are a different story. Summersdale, Westhampnett and the new estates toward the A27 have modern housing of the last twenty to thirty years where we do a lot of the same fascia, soffit and gutter work that we do elsewhere on equivalent stock. Bosham and the harbour villages have a high proportion of clay-tile property with the salt-air challenges you would expect from any Solent waterside location — lead and mortar take a beating. East and West Wittering are predominantly bungalow stock with low-pitch roofs and a fair number of flat-roof extensions where EPDM re-cover is the standard recommendation.

We carry conservation-grade materials on quotes that need them — natural Welsh and Spanish slate, hand-made plain tile, code 4/5 lead — and we are honest about where a like-for-like sympathetic repair makes sense versus where modern materials are a better long-term spend.

Chichester quotes typically take 48-72 hours rather than 48 for Portsmouth, simply because of the travel and survey time involved. Emergency callouts to PO19 are within working hours and within roughly two hours; we do not run out-of-hours emergency cover this far east.

Neighbourhoods we work regularly: Summersdale, Whyke, Fishbourne, Bosham, Westhampnett, East Wittering.

Local landmarks: Chichester Cathedral, Pallant House, Goodwood, the Cross.

James M., Albert Road, Southsea

"Honest quote, on time, tidy work. Replaced our garage roof in EPDM and the dormer flashing. Would call them back without hesitation."
