Roofers in Gosport — we cover the whole peninsula across PO12 and PO13 every week of the year. From our Drayton yard, Gosport is either a short hop on the Gosport ferry across Portsmouth Harbour or a 20-minute drive round via Fareham and the M27. Either way it's core territory; no travel surcharge applies to any PO12 or PO13 postcode.

Gosport's defining feature, from a roofing point of view, is its geography. The peninsula is bordered by Portsmouth Harbour to the east, the Solent to the south, and Stokes Bay to the south-west — three sides exposed to weather. The prevailing south-westerly weather hits Stokes Bay, Lee-on-the-Solent and the Alverstoke seafront with very little to slow it down. Roof material degradation is faster here than equivalent properties even a couple of miles inland: lead corrodes faster, mortar weathers faster, ridge cement loses grip faster.

The housing mix is wider than most Hampshire towns. The waterfront and central Gosport have Victorian terrace and Edwardian semi-detached, often with original slate or clay tile that has now been patched repeatedly. Inland, Bridgemary and Rowner are dominated by 1930s, 1950s and 1960s estate housing — much of it built originally for naval personnel and families — with concrete tile roofs and a noticeable run of flat-roof extensions added in the 1970s and 80s. Modern development around the former Daedalus airfield has added a substantial stock of new-build properties since 2010.

We treat Gosport as a coastal specification by default: code 4 lead minimum on flashings (not the code 3 sometimes substituted to save money), dry-fix ridges and verges on any re-roof, marine-grade fixings on roofline work. The cost difference is small. The lifespan difference is large. Storm callouts to Gosport during working hours are usually within 3-4 hours, faster during named-storm events when we are already running an emergency rota.

Coastal salt exposure is the single biggest factor shaping roof work in Gosport. Properties on Stokes Bay, the Lee-on-the-Solent seafront, the Alverstoke conservation area and the harbour-side stretch through Hardway face accelerated material degradation — particularly on rendered chimneys, lead flashing and any ferrous fixings. Lead facing the prevailing south-westerly weather typically needs renewing 15-20 years sooner than an inland equivalent. Cement bedding on ridges loses grip faster as wind-driven rain works its way into the joints.

Wind-driven rain is the second factor. Even a few hundred metres inland from the seafront, properties get more wind-driven rain than equivalent houses in Portsmouth itself. We see more storm-related leak callouts per house in Gosport than anywhere else on our patch — and a substantially higher proportion of those leaks turn out to be wind-driven rain rather than gravity leaks.

Many older Gosport terraces, particularly the legacy MOD stock around Bridgemary and Rowner, have shared roofs with neighbours. A slipped tile in one terrace is rarely an isolated event — it is almost always part of a longer pattern across the row. We will tell you honestly when a single-tile callout is going to come back as a series of repairs and whether a coordinated approach with neighbours makes more sense.

Flat roofs on the 1960s and 70s housing developments in Bridgemary and Rowner are reaching the age where the original built-up felt is well past it. EPDM re-cover with new edge trims and properly formed upstands is what we recommend on most of these — modern EPDM tolerates the salt environment far better than felt and runs to 25-30 years.

Stokes Bay and direct seafront properties get more frequent storm-damage callouts than anywhere else in our area. We treat them as a higher-priority emergency response and recommend annual inspections rather than waiting for failure.
